I remember that one! Thanks Binibining for remiding me!

It sparked such a debate with my friends because she went to Big Kitchen, Point Loma Seafoods & Old Town Mex (& then some ice cream place in the Hotel Del). We were soooooo mad because she went to the "tourist trap" places & we wantde to see some real undiscovered gems! The only one I could get behind was the Big Kitchen because well that places rocks.

What places would YOU have done? a couple I thought of..

  • Pokez Mexican in Old Town
  • Red Fox Room for steaks
  • Extraordinary Desserts or Just Fabulous
  • Jasmine on Convoy
  • My beloved El Zarape
  • Maybe Sushi Deli?
  • Bronx Pizza

Gelato Vera at Washington and India for a dessert - my fave little place for gelato and other coffee and sweet treats. Been going there since HS so near-dear to my heart anyway.

Los Quatros Milpas in Barrio for Mexican - tho I cannot see Rachael Ray just wandering down there - you sorta need to know where you're going since it's off the well-beaten path. I learned about that place for megalocals (it's also a big SDPD hangout for lunch). But El Zarape is good, too - then she can do her "fluff" stuff around that neighborhood with little antique shops or bust over to Hillcrest nearby.

For old school Italian either Godfather on Clmt Mesa, tho that might be out of the price range, so then in that case, hit Filippis on India for some pizza or a meatball sub. Bronx a good idea above as well.

TOTALLY dig Sushi Deli suggestion... she just better get in line early!

I liked the Pt. Loma Seafood one... sure, it's a trap (and too many school kids when school's in for whale watching or floating lab trips), but it's a GOOD trap at least! I love their fish and chips.

If she wants fish tacos - even tho Rubios is a chain it did start up chaining in SD/Baja... I think that first location is still up near SDSU but then again not sure about that. At least that one still had charm back in the day.

eta - HODADS in OB! Geez how could i forget that one... for a good burger - DH always gets a veggie burger with bacon (yes that's not a typo). Also Rockys in Crown Pt. has some good burgers, too, well did anyway 5ish yrs ago...

Sidenote as far as a great deal tho not SD - If she ever does LA - Diddy Reese in Westwood for the $1 freshly-made cookies and ice cream sandwich. Pick your own cookies fr about 10-12 types made fresh daily, and big scoop of whatever Dreyers ice cream on hand - ONLY A BUCK. Best deal for a dessert on planet earth as far as I am concerned, and you can get 40 of them on $40 a day!  Anyone who went to UCLA has to know what I am talking about here anyway if this is lost on the SD crowd... sorry for the tangent.

:)

I'd add my new favorite pizza, Lefty's Pizza on 30th.  Maybe Niccolossi's for subs (off of Waring Road exit on the 8).  Hash House A Go Go on 5th is great for any meal.  Star Doughnuts on Washington between 12:30-2:00am for fresh chocolate chocolate cakes dipped in coconut.

And my new favorite quickie sushi place: Toro Sushi on Mission Gorge.

Man, now I need to go eat!

Oh sure, w/ coconut, w/out & all other donught varieties too.  I just happen to loooove the chocolate coconut combo.  Definately go when they're fresh & don't let the creepy little building turn you off - they're packed in the morning for a reason.

:)

I love all of the places you all listed- they are almost all favorites of ours. And I LOVE Star Donuts. I always get the small apple fritter. I do love Point Loma Seafood, even if it is really popular.

I went to UCLA and some of my happiest times were spent at Diddy Reese. I always got the ice cream sandwich with peanut butter cookies and pralines and cream ice cream. Sounds weird but so good and cheap!
