An update is necessary, as I’ve done a LOT for the wedding.

The Planning Progress

Done so far:

  • Ceremony Location: Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (La Jolla).  We will be having our ceremony outdoors on the grounds of the museum at the Pacific Union Pocket Park.

  • Reception: Catamaran Resort & Spa (Mission Bay); my FI’s parents honeymooned here almost 40 years ago, so it has some significance for us.  We will be holding our reception outdoors on the north side of the resort on the grassy park next to the beach.  The event will be held under several large palm trees.  We plan to use several Loooooooooooooooong rectangular tables instead of round tables (I’ve always loved that look), and enhance the feeling with lots of candles (even though it will still be light out).

For dining, we were able to choose a package that included a cocktail hour

with passed appetizers, several entrée choices, our wedding cake, and full

bar + wine service at dinner for $135 pp (including tax & gratuity).  This

was one of the best deals I could find.

We plan on having the resort’s tropical birds come out to our cocktail hour

so that they can “mingle” and everyone can take pictures with the talking

parrots and cockatoos.

Because our reception is outdoors, we will have to end the music by 9pm and bar by 10pm…so, we’ll be moving our guests down the way to board           the sternwheeler boat that cruises around the bay.  Supposedly the boat              has live music and cash bar, so we imagine our guests will ride for an        hour or so on that.

Following this we plan to have a mini-bus (or something similar) take us

downtown so that we can bar-hop with whomever is up for it.  I imagine

we’ll stay out ‘til Midnight or 1am, which isn’t so bad considering most weddings are just finishing up at this point.  I would like to find someplace (maybe in the Gaslamp Quarter) that does a flat rate package for all-you-can drink beer & wine (like $25 for 2 hours, etc.)

·        Photography: We are using Richard Pecjak with Sunset Productions.  He shoots in a photojournalistic style & takes all digital images.  We will walk away with a CD of our pictures so that we can print them on our own and make our own album if desired.  He includes an album with ~ 100 5x7 pictures in it (edited pics of course), and will also do a 1-hour post-wedding day photo shoot with us.  (I am excited about this cuz’ we will still be in town for a few days before we leave for the honeymoon)  www.sunset-productions.com

·        DJ: We are still debating on this one.  I have received several recommendations from the board that we are currently considering (Disco Fiend, Jay Brannan, and Dennis Bergstrom with B. Entertained).  We will be meeting them all soon so hopefully we’ll decide.

·        Bridal Gown: I purchased my gown from House of Brides in Schaumburg, Illinois.  It is an Impression gown, and is tightly fit around the waist & bottom.

  • Veil:  It’s the one in the picture & I got it for free as a special on the day I bought my dress.
  • Bridesmaid Dresses:  I will have 5 attendants (I was to have 5, but one of my chosen bridesmaids is pregnant and will be unable to attend)…2 MOH and 3 bridesmaids.  I chose a Watters & Watters dress for $116!  The color of the dress is champagne with an ivory colored cummerbund.  (this picture does not have the right-colored cummerbund)

The ladies will be carrying bouquets with red and other bright colors.  I

also decided on gold-toned or ivory shoes to pair with them.  The ladies

are responsible for purchasing these.

  • BM Jewelry:  I plan on making some hanging earrings with crystals or possibly a necklace.  This will be a gift for the ladies.
  • BM Gifts: Pink velour pants & pink t-shirts that say “Pink Ladies” (purchased for $13 each at Steve & Barry’s University Store).  We will wear these as we get ready on the wedding day & hopefully to our girls weekend for my Bachelorette Party.
  • Bachelorette Party: We plan on going on a 3-day weekend to the southern tip of Michigan to the midwest’s version of “wine country”.  We will do some wine tasting, picnicking, chocolate-eating, etc.  I’ve found some places that allow us to make our wine (from picking the grapes to smashing them, and bottling them).
  • OOT Guest Bags: I have purchased nylon bags that will be given to each guest couple that is in from OOT (almost 100% of our attendees).  We are placing the following in the bags: bottled water, San Diego magazine, brochures & pamphlets of what to do in SD, a mini battery-powered fan, sunscreen, snack foods, 2 sugar cookies in wedding cake & heart shapes, paperback books with a wedding theme (i.e. romance novel with the word “bride” in the title), a pack of SD playing cards (for the plane flight home), a mini-football (oriental trading company) with SD Chargers logo sticker (ordered from ebay).
  • Flowers: My Cousin…she owns a store in Chicago (www.allthingselegant.com) and plans on ordering my flowers from the SD Wholesale Florist & assembling everything on her own.  Inspiration…

For the bridesmaids…I love the berries!

I love the way these stems below are wrapped in satin (too cute)…

  • Centerpieces: DIY, I ordered hurricane vases from a wholesaler in Chicago.  I will be filling them with sand and using a large pillar candle (ivory colored) and adding seashells (mainly starfish & sand dollars) purchased from OTC.  This was the inspiration from another BI bride

  • Aisle Runner: DIY; I plan on making the runner from some type of white fabric and painting it.  We will place sea glass on the runner for extra color.
  • Table Runners, Belly Bars for Cocktail Hour, Rented Outdoor Dance Floor: need to find a party rental facility to get these items.
  • STD: DIY; I created these on plain white textured postcards using Microsoft Word & then sent them out as postcards.
  • Invitations:  DIY; Inspiration (but I plan on replacing the maple leaf with a small starfish & using netting [like a fishing net] across the middle)…
  • Wedding Website:  www.weddingwindow.com It was $79 for the year and it’s FABULOUS!
  • Gift Registries: Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Bloomingdale’s, Abt Electronics in the Chicagoland area
  • Toasting Flutes: Waterford Flutes, received from our registry as a Xmas gift!  They are beautiful!
  • Specialty Martini @ Reception: The Island Vacation created by my FI (Malibu coconut rum, Midori melon liquor, pineapple juice).
  • Ordination:  Our 2 good friends (they are married) are marrying us as they were the ones who introduced us, and they got ordained online.  We bought the ordination for them, and it cost around $100 for both of them to become ministers.  We used Rose Ministries www.roseministries.org .  I'd like my girlfriend to wear red to look different than the bridesmaids, but still have the wedding colors.  I love this dress!

Update as of January 15, 2006

So, we are out here in sunny SD (well, it wasn't so sunny yesterday) checking out our sites & meeting with our vendors.  I was prepared for this weekend to be a whirlwind, but so far, it hasn't been that bad.  Yesterday, we went down to the courthouse to verify our friend's online ordination was legit (only to find out that we should still have him deputized for the day), met with San Diego Party Rentals about linens and belly bars, met with one potential DJ (Jay Brannan), saw our reception site at The Catamaran (we were really happy with it!), and saw the MCA.

We were on a high when we left the Catamaran because we were impressed with the facility and the quality of the food.  We saw some of the guest rooms (which I was scared were going to be icky after reading on this site), but they were not bad at all!

However, when we got to the MCA, we were not as impressed .  The space at the Pacific Union Pocket Park is soooooo small, and I have no idea how they are going to accomodate our 60 guests!  They say that they can fit up to 80, but I don't get it!  Cuvier Park down below was much larger, and they fit 120 chairs there yesterday.  I was told that Cuvier only fit 40!  So upsetting that we didn't book there like we originally wanted to!

Anyway, today we are off to meet with our photographer, Richard Pecjak of Sunset Productions, and then on to my make-up trial with Darryl at the Chanel counter at Nordstrom (Fashion Valley Mall).

Tomorrow we are meeting with DJ #2 (Dennis Bergstrom of B. Entertained) and then to our cake tasting at the French Gourmet.

All in all, it will hopefully be a productive meeting & the weather looks like it might actually be nice today.  When we left Chicago on Friday, it was raining & snowing at the same time!  How does that happen???

I had my make-up trial done with Darel at the Chanel counter of Nordstrom.  He works wonders!  Here are the "before" and "after" shots.  I don't usually look as ugly as this first picture...I'm not quite sure what happened there.

Anyone live in the Mission Bay or La Jolla area & interested in renting out their home from Wednesday, August 2nd - Monday, August 7th 2006?  If you read my previous post you'll see I'm having trouble finding something!!!

Have you looked in Pacific Beach? It is right next to MB. Also look at bayside locations. Summer is prime season in San Diego.  I feel your pain on the ceremony location. We wanted Cuvier too! I did not know you needed to do the whole lottery thing a year in advance! Can you have your ceremony on mission bay near the Catamarran or is La Jolla the only area you want? We did not start really planning till 7 mos before the wedding. I looked at the MCAS, but had the same concerns as you. We got married on the Patio of Azul, our reception location. Everything turned out beautiful. Wedding planning can be so stressfull, but it is all worth it in the end.

I love your journal. Those BM dresses are so fabulous and your dress is so nice too.

Check on Craig's list for the house renting thing. My friend found a rental on there that was pretty flexible in LJ. The other thing you can do is call some of the real estate agents. There is one in the LJ light that is always advertising rentals. I think you may have an issue renting for only 5 days during summer. Have you thought about getting a suite at a hotel? That would be more flexible. Also, if you have your gusets stay at the B and B next to MCASD, there is a deck where people can congregate and it is right across from the ocean. I know they had a two bedroom suite.

Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestions ladies!  I think that we have looked everywhere.  We are actually able to do a Monday - Monday rental from the 31st of July - August 7th, but most rental places will only do a Saturday-Saturday rental.  We don't really need the home, we just thought it would be fun for the wedding party & a great place to host our Rehearsal Dinner!

We already have rooms blocked at the Catamaran.

And, the Scripps Inn told us to pay for everything upfront, and I wasn't too keen on that!

The Out-of-Town Guest Bags are finished.  I have posted a picture elsewhere on the site, but I thought I'd put it here too since this is my journal!  I'm filling them with lots of goodies!  As of now, I only have a few things to go in each: a deck of cards (from the 99 cent store...can't beat it), a paperback romance novel with a wedding "theme" in the title, and some maps & travel info from the SD Welcome Center.  Here is a picture of my stamping & stenciling (oh, and my FI jumped into it too...wish I had a photo of that!) prowess (sp?).
