OK, so I used the SEARCH function  and looked through all the posts related to Hawaii and most of them deal with Oahi and Maui. DH and I are considering going to Hawaii for our first anniversary, but we're starting to discuss plans now because we'll be using airline vouchers we have and a week of timeshare we have been given and have to put in a request ASAP.

I have been to Hawaii twice, DH never. I have been to Oahi, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii (the big island). I remember being very impressed by the volcanos and beaches in Hawaii and the sheer beauty or Kauai and Maui, but I'm worried if we go to one of these islands instead of Oahi, DH will miss out on the "true Hawaiian experience."

I've read the reviews on Maui and that looks like it would be good for us, but the little voice in my head keeps telling me to check into the big island.

Any advice, tips, etc?

I have only been to Kauai and Oahu. I liked both islands but I consider Oahu to be very touristy and too city-like. Are you two looking for a relaxing week? If so maybe avoid Oahu for this time around. Do you think you would want to island hop?

We're definitely not into most of the touristy stuff and would definitely be looking to relax, but I'd like him to be able to go to a real luau. Island hopping I guess would be an option, but I think we're looking to keep our costs lower and thus would be using the timeshare for our lodging (it's a Saturday-Saturday) stay, but we could check out early and visit another island for two days or something?

We traded my mom's timeshare for our HM and stayed at the Marriott Beach Club on Kauaii.  It was BEAUTIFUL and we had a wonderful time.  There are still luaus and stuff like that on Kauai, and I think it is still a very "hawaiian experience".  Anyway, we loved it and dream about going back allthe time.

We went to Kauai for our HM and LOVED it! We had so much fun, and really felt it was a true Hawaiian experience. We went to a big luau there, so there is definately that. I've never been to any other islands, so I don't have anything to compare it to though.

We went to Maui and Kauai for our honeymoon, and we wish that we
would have just done Kauai. We are hopefullly going back for our 1 yr.
ann. in August. It is the most amazing place that I have ever been to.
Beautiful island, lots of green mountains, and great food. I dream about
being there everyday with DH. It was the most relaxing 5 days! Maui is
great too. It was just really packed at the hotel we stayed at, but I love it
there too. I haven't been to the other islands though. A co-worker of
mine went to Maui, Kauai and Oahu. She said Oahu was to crowded, and
would take Kauai over Maui too. You really can't go wrong with any of the
islands.
Finally married after almost 10 years together!!!! We are so happy!!!!!!!!

My only concern is that you would run out of things to do if it's a whole week in Kauai. We only went for 2 or 3 days and I feel like we did everything we wanted. Maybe half Maui and half Kauai would work. ???

We went to Oahu for our HM, but we didn't stay in Waikiki, which is why I think we loved it so much.  If you can stay in Ko Olina or on the North Shore, then you're able to stay away from all of the toursts, but still have the availability of going to see the touristy things.  We stayed at the www.Ihilani.com, which my aunt and uncle got for us by trading in their Marriott time share.  It was a BEAUTIFUL place and we really could have stayed there the entire time we were in Hawaii.  It was very relaxing.  They had 4 beaches and lagoons that were great for snorkeling, swimming or just laying around on the beach.  Plus, they have the Paradise Cove luau and one other big luau which are both on their property.

It only took us about 30 minutes to get anywhere on the island, so we were able to see all of the touristy things like the Arizona Memorial, Pali Lookout, etc. but it really felt like we were worlds away from everything.  We upgraded to an ocean view room, which was totally worth the money.

I've been to Oahu (our HM last year) and the Big Island (1998 I think), and I loved both.  In Oahu, we stayed in Waikiki and on the North Shore, and it was a great combination of touristy and nature stuff.  We went to the luau @ the Polynesian Cultural Center, and it was supposedly as authentic as you can get.  On the Big Island, I stayed in a time share in Kona-Kailua, and we went to a luau that was probably touristy, but I didn't know any better   I liked the diversity of landscapes on the Big Island, and I really wish that we would've taken a helicopter ride over the lava flow, w/c you can only do on that particular island.  I think both islands have a lot to offer, so you can't go wrong.  I think it *may* be easier to get a flight to Oahu or Hawaii vs. Kauai, but we didn't fly on vouchers, so I'm not really sure- just have a feeling that there are more direct flights to the larger islands.

Anyway, definitely let us know what you decide- I'm so jealous that you're going to Hawaii, so I'll have to live vicariously through you
