Any suggestions for must-do/see's in Kauai?  Also...is it necessary to have a rental car or is most of the time spent at the resort or on the beach?

Hello TiffanyDoDah!

I have been there twice and it is by far my favorite island.  You definitely need to rent a car, you can just hang around the pool, but most everything is spread out.  it takes a full day to go up to either the Waiamea (sp?) Canyon and overlook or up to the ultra awesome beaches in Princeville and Hanalei Town.

Great choice, it's rains in the northern part daily, but it's warm and dries fast.  It is so romantic and beautiful.

Enjoy!

It's better when we're 2gether

I highly recommend renting a car, things are very spread out. Definitely go to "the end of the road" in Ka'a -- just past Hanalei. It is amazing and the snorkeling is great, even when it is raining.

Get the "Kauai Revealed" book by Andrew Doughty -- it gives you all sorts of great things to do/try from a non-touristy perspective.

I've been twice since DH's family owns a condo in Princeville...it's my favorite spot in the whole world!  Definiltey have to do a Napali coast tour.  Someone mentioned end of the road...that's a great place too!  Hanalei has amazing restaurants (we are huge fans of Sushi Blues) and is just a cute town over all.  I recommend getting a car since stuff is spread out all over the island.  Different shores have different "vibes" too, the south shore tends to be more touristy and gets more surfers while the North shore seems to be quieter.    The Ultimate Kauai book will tell you about everything you could possibly want to do on the island.

I don't know what type of stuff you guys like to do, but we are huge hikers so let me know if you want to know of any great trails and waterfalls to go to.

Thank you all so much.  This gives me a lot of great ideas and I will be reserving that car for sure now!  I am so excited...only 32 more days until I'm in paradise!

Hi Tiffany - My FI and I are going to Kauai in August. We have two books "Kauai underground guide" and one about Hawaii in general that his parents gave us for Xmas. I would get one of those to help you in making choices. We did rent a car because we want to explore the island because it is so small. We rented a convertible!!! Yay. We are going to go inner tubing, the Sheraton has a on the beach Luau (mondays and fridays), horseback riding on the beach, helicopter tour and of course snorkeling and surfing! Where are you staying? Let me know how the trip is!!!

You must stop for a saimin lunch and shave ice for dessert at Hamura Saimin on Kress Street in Lihue. YUM! It's hard to find, but a decent road map will get you there. It's a little hole in the wall. Our helicopter tour was pretty amazing as well. I recommend this island more than any other for that type of thing.

How funny is this!  We are date twins and honeymoon twins!!!  We are going to Kauai in August the day after our wedding.

I am looking forward to it.  We have been there twice before and it's our FAVORITE island.
