Well, after finding almost all my vendors here on BI and getting tons of ideas and questions answered (mostly by using the Search function ), I decided it might be time to start a journal.  It will be a great way for me to keep track of all I've done and all I need to do in the next few months.  And I can give credit to all of you who have helped me out soooo much, even if you didn't know it before!

How we met:

The short story is that we met in a bar, but it's a little more complicated than that.  I had just gone through a very rough time when I had foot surgery and was in a cast and on crutches for over 3 months.  And yes, it was my right foot, so I couldn't drive!  I had finally gotten the cast off and could drive and go out and feel like a normal person.  On March 27, 2004, some friends and I were meeting my brother and some of his friends at the Blarney Stone in Clairemont to hang out.  (The reason I remember the date is because I found out later that it was FI's birthday! He now says the meeting me was the best birthday present he's ever gotten.)  My brother had a table and I was standing around with my friends, but when they all started to leave, I went to go sit with my brother.  I had met everyone at the table earlier, except this one guy at the other end.  I thought, wow, he's cute, I wonder who he is, and when got introduced I found out that he was one of my brother's old youth group leaders and had been randomly invited by a different friend of my brother.  My brother is three years younger than I am, so I figured this guy must be around my age, maybe a little older, and hmm, this could be interesting.
We got to talking and basically talked there most of the night.  I found out that he still went to my brother's church and was actually a music leader for one of the services, so I ended up seeing him again the next day at church.  Then I found out that my mom knew his family from church and thought he was such a great guy, and I'd never met him before in all those years they had known him!  I guess the timing just wasn't right back then.  We saw each other around here and there for the next few months and said hello, but nothing really happened for quite a while...

How we got together:

Ok, this is where the story gets interesting.  3 months after we met, I was trying to plan a surprise birthday party for my brother and wanted to get some people from church there.  So, gathering up my courage, I invited FI and asked him to invite anyone else he thought might want to come, since he knew so many people that my brother was friends with.  He now thinks that it was just a ploy to get him to hang out with me, but I really was trying to plan a party!  So we had the party (at the Blarney Stone again ) and we talked and talked all night long, and even took care of some drunk people together, since neither one of us are big drinkers ourselves.  I was definitely interested, and I could tell he was, but I would never have made the first move.  Ok, I guess inviting him there was making the first move, but I don't think that really counts!  As we were leaving, he asked if I would like to go out sometime, and of course I said yes!

Our First Non-Date and Our First Real Date:

That Sunday at church we set up a date for Tuesday night.  He's got a very crazy schedule with his work, and I was done with teaching for the summer, so it worked for us.  Well, not an hour after setting that up, he calls and says that he has tickets to the Padres game that starts in about an hour, and would I like to go with him?  Now, just so you know, I am NOT a last minute sort of person, so of course I was totally stressing out about what to wear and my house was a mess and all that stuff.  But I gave him directions and told him to call when he was outside the complex and I would come out to his car, so everything was fine.  We had a great time and I could not tell you one detail about the game, because we talked all the way through.  That was what we call our first non-date.
So, then Tuesday comes, and I'm getting ready for the real date.  Well, he calls and says that he has a flat tire and he'll be a little late!  WHAT??  This is not starting well.  He was almost an hour late.  But, when he got to my house (which was now completely clean, by the way ), he had brought me a potted plant, because he remembered me saying that I didn't have a very good view, and he wanted to give me something nice to look at.  That was just about the sweetest thing I had ever heard, and I just melted!  It was one of those "you had me at hello" moments.  We ended up going out to Hamburger Mary's in Hillcrest, then driving to the Coronado Ferry Landing and, you guessed it, talking all night long.  Later we came back to my house and he kissed me just before he left.  And that was how it all started...

The Proposal:

Our one-year anniversary of our first date was coming up, so we decided to recreate it and do the same things, minus the flat tire part.  We got a little dressed up, went to Hamburger Mary's, then went out to Coronado.  He had been acting weird and doing a few sneaky things recently, but my birthday was around the same time, so I just chalked it up to him trying to sneak away to get me something.  We had looked at rings and talked about getting married, but it always seemed further down the road to me.  We were sitting at the ferry landing, facing downtown, and it was pretty chilly, so I was freezing but he didn't want to leave just yet.  So this security guard came up and randomly started talking to us, and he was a little weird, but we just went with it.  Then I heard all these people walk up behind us, and I thought maybe the ferry was loading soon and we were in the way.  So I turned around and I see my brother and my parents, FI's brother and his girlfriend, FI's roommate and another friend.  I was totally surprised and confused.  They were all holding little potted plants (remember the first date??) and they were just standing there surrounding us in a little semi-circle smiling like fools.  That was when I knew, but I just couldn't believe it yet.

At this point, FI's roommate hands him his guitar, and FI hands me the words to this song, but he says, don't read too fast and don't get to the end too quickly.  He then plays and sings this song that he wrote for me, in front of everyone (including the weird security guard) and the last lines say, "And now I kneel down before you on one knee, and ask you if you will hold my hand and not let go".  (Ok, I'm tearing up just thinking about it!)  Then he puts down the guitar, holds my hand and pulls out the ring, saying all of these amazing things about how much he loves me and how I'm the best birthday gift he could have ever hoped for and he wants to spend his life with me, and then he gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him!  And I said, "Of course!" through all the tears and we hugged and kissed and he carefully put the ring on, even though our hands were shaking so badly (he told me later that he was terrified he was going to drop the ring into the water).  It was more amazing than anything I could have ever dreamed of.  And the funniest part is that about 5 minutes later, fireworks started going off across the bay, like they were planned especially for us!  FI likes to say that he knew that was going to happen, but it was a case of perfect timing, kind of like our entire relationship .

TO BE CONTINUED...

The Planning:

Here is what is done so far, thanks to BI!

  • Photo: Noelle Franzen
  • Day of Coordinator: Melanie from I Do Engagements
  • Video: My uncle
  • Cake: Edelweiss, 3 tier marble cake with white chocolate macadamia on the bottom and french chocolate chip on the top two (YUM!)
  • Dress: David's Bridal (everything went fine, luckily)
  • Alterations: Lorraine (Yay!!!)
  • BM Dresses: Karen at RSVP
  • DJ: Mike Ellis
  • Reception: Hilton Mission Valley
  • Church: My church in Santee (this was a very hard decision, I'll post the story eventually)
  • Flowers: Tess at Tessilk flowers, recommended by Melanie
  • Honeymoon: Carnival Cruise to Catalina and Ensenada
  • Tuxes: Afterhours Formalwear (they gave us a two for one coupon for the cruise)
  • NFP class:  Natural Family Planning class required by the church, we were actually there with kscooby and didn't know it!

Almost done:

  • Invites: Probably through Karen at RSVP
  • Makeup: Devra at Diesel Salon
  • RD: Probably Filippi's on Mission Gorge/Friars

Need to do:

  • Transportation:  I'm thinking of renting a Chrysler 300 for the weekend as my gift to FI.  He always drools over that car ! It will be cheaper or about the same as a limo.
  • Hair:  Don't know, but have several options
  • Favors:  If we do them, possible bracelets from the ONE charity and/or other donation
  • Shoes:  Have ordered a few pairs from Zappos, have to try them on with the dress
  • Coloring book: thanks to pinayapr05 for the template
  • Program: have a few templates
  • Pre-Cana: in January, with itsmars, too
  • Engaged Encounter: February, also with itsmars!  Anyone else going to these???
  • Meet with church coordinator and priest to set up ceremony, readings, music, etc.
  • Tasting for reception food

Although I'm sure there's more to do that I haven't thought of right now, that's not bad for only being engaged since July 14!

The ring:

My ring is a 1/2 carat oval set in white gold.  My wedding ring will be just a thin plain white gold band.  Here is a really blurry picture from the night we got engaged, but I'll post a better one later.  I have super small fingers (size 3 3/4!) so it's just perfect.

Here is a pic of us before he proposed at the Ferry Landing.

The dress:

I searched for the dress for a while.  I am such a second-guesser that I didn't think I was ever going to find that "this is the one" dress, and if I did get that feeling, I was going to have to keep searching until I was sure.  I was determined not to go to David's after hearing the horror stories from this board, as well as on the advice of the Bridal Bargains book.  I searched the internet and found some styles I liked and tried some on at Bridal and Tuxedo (they didn't really bug me too much) and Bridal Veil (did not like that store at all, their dresses were trashed).  My mom really wanted to go to David's, so I went to the La Mesa one to see what they had.  I saw this dress on the mannequin right as we walked in, and I guess I have to say now that I fell in love with it.  It was the only dress that made me feel close to "the one".  After trying on the ones at BTG again with friends and then going to 2000 Dreams and finding a San Patrick one that was really nice, but really expensive, I decided that the David's one was it.  I had already gone back to try it 3 or 4 times, so that told me that I had made the decision.  Here are some pictures!

ETA:  I also went with my MOH to Prevue and tried on about 10 dresses.  They have a great selection if you're looking for ideas.

I'm borrowing my friend's veil.  She got married in August and I was a BM for her and she's going to be one for me.
