Well, Justin and I got really serious about all of the wedding planning this weekend, so I thought I would get really serious with posting a journal. Looking through BI has been very helpful with finding information on what has and hasn't worked for you guys, I want to help others in return. I'm just going to start with my post I already did on the engagement and about site searching this weekend, then I'll get back into info about the two of us and all that good stuff later when I have more time.

The engagement
I have been a lurker here for awhile, and this is the first post I've started, and I'm just too excited! I love weddings and have been collecting magazines forever and I always surf all the web pages (I always thought I'd be a wedding coordinator if I wasn't an engineer) so I'm happy I get to plan a wedding with the man of my dreams!

Justin's family lives in Chicago, and we were back there for Christmas. We flew back to Long Beach on Christmas day and arrived at the appartment at about 11pm, luggage in tow to find ~100 white votive candles and pink and white rosepetals everywhere. (Our friends had helped with the surprise). I asked him what was going on and he said that since we spent Christmas with his fam, that he wanted to do something romantic for just the two of us. I bought it because he always does amazing romantic things, and I was 100% convinced that he wouldn't propose until after I graduate from grad school in May. I actually got a little mad at him in my head becuase I thought it looked like a proposal and I was mad he was tricking me into thinking it was one when there was no way it could be. Sneaky guy.

Our song (Fly me to the moon by Sinatra) was playing on repeat in the background, and we danced in the living room and then drank some fancy champagne in the good champagne glasses. He had his computer connected to the TV and showed me a Powerpoint slideshow (what an engineer! ) with cute pics of the two of us together. Then he told me to stand up, and I thought he wanted to dance some more, but then he got down on one knee! I don't quite remember what he said because I was crying like crazy, but I told him YES about thirty times and huged and kissed him lots!

Here is what the ring looks like - he worked with a jewler in SD to design it (Art in 18k?)

Afterwards we were so hungry, we luckily found a diner that was open on Christmas evening and went and got some food. One of the busboys took our picture, and I love the way the light reflects off the ring! (Ignore us being scruffy, we traveled all day!)

The site search
Justin and I live up in Long Beach, but I grew up in San Diego, so we came down this past weekend to visit my mom and go to a lot of sites in San Diego and check them out. Here are my thoughts on some of them. I'll give thoughts on pricing later... we're engineers so we have to put everything in a spreadsheet to asses our choices financially.

Hilton Gaslamp - the hotel was super cool, very boutique-ey, and I would love to stay there, but I couldn't picture my wedding there. I want something more ballroom, and their ceremony/reception site was a little more alternative

San Diego Aerospace Museum (Balboa Park) - Justin and I are both Aerospace Engineers and pilots, so we stopped by Aero museum to look at the space and try to figure out how we could incorporate it with our wedding weekend. It is very cool with this great big atrium. We are thinking maybe having a caterer come in and do the rehearsal dinner, or doing the cocktail hour there. The cocktail hour sounds more appealing because then more of our guests would be able to go than if we did the rehearsal dinner there, and it is just so us it would be great. We are very big nerds, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to have the ceremony or reception there. It has to be elegant!

The Prado (Balboa Park) - Justin's stepmom came and visited us over hte summer, and my mom and I took them out for dinner at the Prado and some Shakespeare at the Old Globe and we had a great time. We saw that another wedding was going on and that's when I got the idea in my head to get married here. We are having a lot of OOT guests, and wanted to do something either on the water or at Balboa park so it would be very San Diego, and this is just so beautiful and elegant on top of it. I loved the grand ballroom (we are having 200 - 250 guests) but I'm not so sure about the ceremony site. We don't like how the majority of the guests are so far away from the ceremony, and the topiaries up by the front might get in the way of the pictures. Anyone that has gotten married here and can give me an idea of how it worked out would be greatly appreciated.

Manchester Hyatt - This is a beautiful hotel. I absolutely love it, and I would love to incorporate the Top of the Hyatt into the wedding weekend somehow. But my FH nailed it when he said that the hotel felt more "convention-ey" than "wedding-ey." Plus, we didn't like the outdoor ceremony terrace very much.

Marriott - I don't know what the name of the Marriott down there is off the top of my head. We liked their terrace where you can get married a lot, but the place seemed a little expensive and also convention-ey. There wasn't anyone from catering there to talk to, and the Concierge chick didn't have a lot of info and didn't seem too keen to show us around.

The Bristol - What everyone has said is true, Lisa is totally awesome and the best. I would consider getting married there just to work with her. She is the only one who gave us a detailed estimate of what having our wedding there would cost, and she was so knowledgable and friendly. But the space felt a little cramped for us, and the hotel seemed a little too modern for the idea we had in our heads. Loved the retractable ceiling, but we also didn't like the view the best either.

Lomas Santa Fe Country Club - Dude, is this place a steal! This is near my mom's house and I used to take swimming lessons there. They have a great deal where you can pick the Silver, Gold or platinum package. For platinum, you get your booze included, and it is way affordable compared to the other places we looked. The feel of the place was somewhat similar to a lode somewhere, which would be cool since FH and I met when we were skiing, but we still liked the Prado better.

Coronado Marriott - Dude. They have flamingos in their fountain and they drove us around on a golf cart. How fun is that!?!? They have a great view - I think it's better to look across the bay at the skyline than the other way around. I wasn't wowed by the ceremony site (I'm noticing a trend) and I just liked the Prado better.

Loews (sp?) Coronado - We didn't really talk to anyone there, just poked our heads around and got some brochures. Seemed like it would be the coolest place to stay, but it's farther south on Coronado, so we couldn't see the skyline.

So it looks like the Prado it is! Tory is going to call me tomorrow to confirm some stuff so we can get our date all set, and I'm so excited!

I am worried though because one of my good friends is getting married in Michigan two weeks after our wedding, and I'd be worried about scheduling the honeymoon so I could get back for that, and I don't want to steal any of her thunder.

Also, we looked at the Hilton Torrey Pines the weekend after we got engaged, as it had always been my dream spot of where to get married. I thought the guys could go have fun and golf while the girls were at the spa, the view is not to be beat, and the room and everything are so pretty, but they charge way more for booze (hosted bar all night is v. important to us) than anywhere else. I mean, maybe we calculated it wrong or something. I could rationalize spending the extra money for the great site and great view, but this way I feel like they'd be taking advantage, and I don't like the feeling, you know?

Ok, now I think it's probably time to start from the beginning and tell y'all a little bit about us.

Justin and I are both engineers for the same big company. There are many "campuses" or whatever you call them around Southern Calfornia, and he works in one in Huntington Beach, and I'm in downtown Long Beach. There is a group called REACH: Regional Events and Activities for College Hires that gets everyone together for social events, seminars, networking, and other fun stuff. There was a huge ski trip two years ago that everyone went on, and my FH and I were both helping get the charter bus going. Actually, my friend Rob was the big planner, and he said my job was to find Justin, who is a major in-depth planner, and to take his clipboard away for ten minutes and make him go get a beer and relax. Well I did and it was love at first sight for both of us! We were really amazed at how much we have in common, very similar families with troubled younger siblings, huge love of football, and we're both really silly and have a lot of fun together. Plus we both have our pilots licenses. The one thing is that he went to U of Illinois and I went to U of Michigan. If you don't know, Illini hate Wolverines with all of their being because we always beat them in football, and Wolverines could really care less about Illini. When my FH was in college he swore he'd never even be friends with a Wolverine because we are "evil and have no soul" so I guess it's a testament to how much he loves me that he's willing to put up with that!

We dated for about 22 months before getting engaged, and it's been really amazing. We have the best communication out of any of the other couples I know, which I think is why we hardly ever fight.

As for wedding planning stuff, we are definitely going with the Prado! Yay! They only had one Saturday opening for the rest of the year, so we are getting married on Sept 16th. I originally turned down the date because that's the day of the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game. I hate it when people plan their weddings to go up against college football games, and I swore I'd never do that, but then I realized that we're on the west coast, and our games are usually on at 9 or noon, so we'll be fine. I told my FH if the game goes into OT, I'll be a little late to the ceremony.

Anyway, we're both really excited about the Prado, even though I'm not too jazzed about the way that the ceremony site is layed out. But it's really pretty and I'll get over it.

We are 99% sure that we're going with Joe Stein from Studio Paris for our photography. He is a friend of my mom's, and he does really great work, so I probably won't even go with another quote. I know that's bad, but planning from Long Beach makes visiting tons of vendors a little difficult, especially since FH is taking a temporary assignment up in Seattle for a few months starting Thursday!

Plus I"m really excited to have met my Prado date twin on BI, we are looking into a great deal to share some flower costs, and I'm so excited to have someone to talk to about all the fun wedding planning stuff!

As for dresses, I am super excited, but super anxious about finally having to narrow it down to one dress after being in love with about a million wedding dresses since I started buying wedding magazines when I was 12. My mom and I went to Mon Amie right after we got engaged. We found some nice dresses, but I'm not sure we found "the one." I am going to The White Dress with a friend of mine today and I am super excited about trying on more dresses! I have been kicking my butt with a personal trainer in the gym lately, so hopefully everythng will look pretty good. :)

Yay! FH and I just booked our honeymoon! We did it through Costco travel, and I feel like we got a pretty good deal. We are going for eight nights, so that's exciting. I'd like to be there longer, but one of my good friends is getting married on 9/30 (our wedding is 9/16) so I want to make sure that we get back in time for it! We are flying into Papeete, then we are spending four nights in the Kia Ora hotel on Rangiroa, the four nights in Moorea. Yay! I can't wait to be in our overwater bungalow!

Dress shopping! I am so excited, my friend Gail and I went dress shopping at http://www.thewhitedress.com - The White Dress  in Corona Del Mar. I know it's far away for y'all down in SD, but I had such a good time there, Marlis was so nice, and I think it's definitely worth a road trip with your mom and some girlfriends! Here are the top three dresses I liked that I tried on.

Jenny Lee 509

Melissa Sweet Lia

Melissa Sweet Sadie

I tried on Sadie, and the pink was a lot brighter than it looks in the picture. But it was very very pretty, but I think I'd get it with a white sash. With the Jenny Lee one, it has a very cool back, I wish I could find a picture of it, so if anyone has one, I'd looove to get a copy of it!

I am very excited about the GTG coming up. But we are coming down to SD that weekend to meet with a ton of vendors and take our engagement pictures at sunset, so I'll probably be a little late.

Registry

Woah, we spent 6 1/2 hours at South Coast Plaza today doing some registering (and Versace is closing, so I got some waaaaaay expensive jeans for 80% off so I could afford them!) We started at Williams Sonoma, which was a lot of fun. FH and I are big chefs and both love to be in the kitchen cooking. They have this great thing where they open the store early to engaged couples to do their registy. There was food and a gift bag set up for us! And the sales people were so attentive.

We also registered at Macy's and were very excited about the china and stemware we got. A lot of people debate on if they're going to get that stuff, but we entertain a lot, so we will definitely get some use out of it!

But that was a bit long to be at the mall, now my sweetie and I are just pooped!

Oh, and yesterday I went to David's Bridal with some friends. Everyone always says it's hit or miss with what kind of service you get when you're there, and I definitely got a miss. I felt like I was at Costco. Even if I found The Dress there, I don't think I'd buy it because the service just sucked that much.

Hello! I am so excited for you, I just love the Prado and that was my original choice, but it's just not in the budget :( I know what you mean about the ceremony set up, but its so beautiful regardless..... I know you will be happy! We are going with La Valencia which is beautiful as well. I was totally thinking about registering at WillamSonoma too!

If you register with WS, definitely sign up to do the morning registry thing. Free donuts! Seriously, what more could you ask for! Well, maybe a more affordable espresso machine.

I was just looking on the Prado restaurant site:
http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/cohn/pradobalboa/index.html

and I found out that they have cooking classes there! http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/cohn/balboawinefood/cookingfr ame.html

What a fun date for FH and I to try sometime! I'll have to post about this on our Prado brides topic!

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed lately. When Justin and I first started talking about getting married, I told him that I was fine with waiting until after I graduated from grad school (thought it was good to take the pressure off) because I didn't want to be working full time, planning a wedding, and taking classes at the same time. Well, he proposed before my last semester. I'm so happy that we're engaged, and I'm loving all of the wedding stuff, I always have a hard time saying "no" to adding additional things in my life, and with a wedding 7 months, 3 weeks and 2 days away, there's not a lot I can say "no" to. There's work, school, wedding planning, we're redoing the bathroom (need a tile guy! It's been too long that I've been showering in the gym!), plus I'm on a huge work-out kick - I got a personal trainer in December before Justin proposed to get all buff for ski season because I wasn't in good enough shape to tackle the mountain the way I wanted to last season. Getting in shape for the wedding is an added bonus. Plus it's so hard to do the essentials like grocery shopping, dry cleaning, doctors appointments and hair cuts in between! I'm taking my kitty to the vet today. She is old and her kidneys are starting to fail her, and I am so so upset over it. She is like a daughter to me, and I hate that she is losing weight and not feeling well.

I just got through reading Katie's journal, and I'm inspired. So here's the wedding stuff I have going on.
  • Teeth bleaching - going to my dentist on Thursday to pick up my stuff. He has a really great deal for brides, so if you're up near Costa Mesa, PM me and I'll let you know all about him.
  • Need to book OOT hotel rooms.
  • Next week we are going down to SD to do everything we can fit while Justin is in town.
    • Meeting with ring designer to get appraisal of ring and discuss having her do wedding bands. My ring isn't circular, it's kinda flat on the bottom, so I think it would work best if they were the same shape.
    • Meet with Encore Video
    • Meet with Studio Flora
    • Meet with DJ Mike Hogan
    • Take Engagement photos (what am I going to wear?!?!)
    • Meet wtih Peggi Walker at Metro Floral. My date twin from the Prado is using her, and I would love it if we could work something out.
    • Hopefully go look at invitations if there's time. I want to get a monogram designed for us that will be the theme, and I'd like to figure out how to get that done pretty early on so I can use it on the STDs and our web page.
  • I sent flowers to all my OOT BMs to ask them to be in the wedding party, I want to give them personally to my two SD BMs that weekend we're down there, so we're going to have to find some time to hang out.
Done so far:
  • Reception site: The Prado
  • Photographer: Joe Stein from Studio Paris
  • Officiant: Fr. Menees from Grace Lutheran Church. He was the minister at my highschool, so I was happy that I was able to track him down.
  • Looked at a bunch of dresses
  • Bought enough wedding magazines to clutter the appartment and make it hard to find the cat.
  • Registry: Macy's, Williams Sonoma and Home Depot
  • Honeymoon is booked: Tahiti, Rangiroa and Moorea

Hey Danimal,

I saw you were from the LBC so I thought I'd stop by and say hi!  I live there too!  And right now I'm temping downtown in City Hall.

Looks like you have a lot going on!  You really do have a lot on your plate planning your wedding and finishing grad school.  Just remember to take care of yourself!!

I had a year from the worst of times (my parents announced their divorce, we moved across the country, and my grandfather died) to the best of times (we got married, DH finished his thesis).  I had to schedule back massages to relieve the stress.  The honeymoon we had, btw, was so relaxing; it was just what we needed.

Oh and btw, my DH went to Ohio State, and I worked there for a couple years, too.
There are actually quite a few Michigan folks on this board, too-- brouhaha63 and littlegiraffe come to mind.  Good luck with your planning!

Hi Kitty! You are honestly the nicest Buckeye I have ever met. Normally they are just mean to me, but I tend to do a bit of provoking! :) I work in the World Trade Center downtown, so PM me if you want to meet for lunch sometime!

I hear you on needing a break to relieve stress. FH and I are going up to Tahoe a week from Thursday (the same trip we met on two years ago) and that will be very good for us. But FH found out he is definitely leaving for Seattle on Monday, which is our 2-year anniversary, so I am sad.

Bridal Bazaar
Wow! What an overwhelming experience! We walked 1.8 miles (I wore my pedometer) and picked up 12.5 pounds of swag. We were really going to look for videographers, DJs, and anything else that caught our eye. I was very excited to see two photo-booth guys there because Justin and I really wanted to do that instead of a guestbook.

Here is a pic of Justin and I - I thought the stickers were cute, he thought they were cheezy, so I made him take a picture with me!

I was very excited to chat with Joe Stein from Studio Paris. He is our photographer, and he's really nice and I got to ask him a few questions without feeling like a nuisance.

I was also psyched to see Flour Power there. I thought their cakes were definitely the prettiest, which is important because this is Justin's big item (His mom used to bake wedding cakes for friends, and he always helped, so he loves baking and always makes me yummy stuff!) Here are cake pics from them:

So here are some flowers that I liked. I definitely want white peoneys for my bouquet, and white flowers in my centerpieces but I'm not sure what to do for BMs bouquets. I feel like they shouldn't be white. My colors are navy blue, white, and silver (girls in silver dresses... a dark silver more than a white silver).

Blue flowers!

As for these centerpieces, I'd want to fill them with white flowers. Justin likes the clear vase look, I like the silver, because that's one of our colors. Tablecloths will be navy with white underlays. What do you ladies think?

That's about all I have to post about now. I have to go through all the videographers DVDs this week... in addition to a dermatologist appointment, haircut, manicure, eyebrow wax, working out, and homework. Eeesh! I was due for all that stuff anyway, but let it all pile up this week since our e-pics are this weekend. Hopefully it will make everything look really good.

And I will  leave you with this... guys aren't so tough and can't handle the crazy bridal bazaar wedding stuff!

Sorry it took so long to finally post. I can't imagine juggling all this stuff at the same time

Your experience with the Bridal Bazaar was too too funny! I love the pic of Justin. My FI was more pumped when we left than going (reminded him something of the doctor's office I think I heard him say).

I love your colors too, mine are blues with yellow. Finding pretty blue flowers is such a challenge. (Personally I didn't like the "blue" roses - I would go with one of the sterling varieties for some simple silver accents.) There were some amazing blues though at the show.

Keep up the fun of journaling!

Yeah, I don't like the "blue" roses or anything that looks too dyed myself. I'm having that problem with my FH - I'll see something that looks cool and I'll show him and say "Isn't that neat?" and then I have to make sure to differentiate between something that's just neat and I think is cool, and something that's neat because I want it for us!

Wild Wedding Weekend!

This weekend was super busy, but we got so much done! Warning – long post!

Friday

Worked a full day starting at 6am, hopped in the car with FH and kitty in tow and went down to SD. We met with Gail from Art in 18K who designed my ring. She had to look at it again for the official appraisal, and we talked to her about designing a wedding band for me that would fit perfectly against my ering. She said she'd have to keep my ering for a few days, and I'm all "Noooo!"  She is super-duper cute and very fun and creative

Then we went to PB to hang out with my friend Katie from highschool. Asked her to be a BM, all is good. Went to Cabo Cantina for dinner... very good fajitas and great drink specials.

Saturday

Got up early and met with Dan from Encore Video (858-689-9965) because he was recommended by our photographer. I watched all the DVDs that I could get from the Bridal Bazaar, and I thought I knew what to expect, but man-o-man does Dan put everyone else in the dust! Then he told me that he did a certain fabulous Charger's wedding video, and I knew Dan was the man for me! His stuff is so well done and so funny, touching and creative. More money than my Knot budgeter said I could spend on a videographer, but I think photos and video and the stuff that will last after one day are the important things to spend money on. He even has aerial shots of our site! I think he’s probably the vendor I’m most excited about. BOOKED.

Then we went to see http://www.studioflora.com/ - Paul from StudioFlora and he was wonderful. What really impressed us the most was when I first said that I wanted peonies for my bouquet, he got right on the phone to talk to vendors to see if he could make it happen. Unfortunately, it won't work for our date, so I'm bummed, but I was impressed that he took the initiative to get moving on it. He also said he'd show us some prototypes of bouquets and centerpieces about two weeks before the wedding. That really impressed us! Waiting for quote

Our last vendor stop of the day was http://www.djmikehogan.com/ - DJ Mike Hogan . He was very cool! He has this great voice and he definitely sounds like he’d be on the radio. I mean, nowadays anyone can get any songs that you want for your wedding, it’s all about finding a DJ that is going to be a good Emcee and make your night go well. He is really anal about the details like my mom, my FH and I, so we liked him. He talked about how he always goes to check on the kitchen, family members needed for a dance, whatever a few minutes before he announces it so he makes sure that there aren’t any hold-ups and the night keeps going smoothly and everyone has fun! BOOKED.

Next I stopped by the UTC Nordstrom’s MAC counter to get my makeup done. They said I’d have a hard time getting in because I didn’t have an appointment, but I was just nice yet insistent and got in no problem. Gaby is the one who did my makeup, and she did it naturally and a very good job. You’ll see when the e-pics come (soon!). I’m thinking about using her and her partner to do my BMs for my wedding… There is a lady I’ve used before that I want to use again for myself.

Engagement pics! We had a lot of fun doing this. http://www.studioparis.com/ - Joe from Studio Paris is so nice and we really had a lot of fun working with him. We just have a good feeling that they came out well, even though it was super foggy on the beach on Saturday! No sunset, and it frizzed my hair towards the end!

Went to Chevy’s for dinner with my buddy from preschool Matt.  He’s going to be in the wedding, so we’re very excited.

Sunday

http://www.peggiwalker.com/ - Peggi Walker with Metro Floral was very nice and very creative. Plus it’s great that she is the florist that bballprncess is using at her 4pm ceremony right before mine, so I trust that she’s good because BI referrals are the bomb! My mom was totally impressed that she had magnets for putting the corsages/bouts on… it’s the little things that get us excited. I really liked her centerpieces too. Poor Justin, having to go to two florists in one weekend!

Then we headed up to the Superbowl party and that was that. Today is our two year anniversary, and I am so sad because Justin hopped on a plane this morning to head up to Seattle for FOUR STUPID MONTHS. I am really sad, but I have to keep remembering that I am a strong woman and I can live by myself. It’s just weird to be by yourself after living with someone for a year. The good news is that we’re going on our annual trip to Tahoe (the same one we met on) this Thursday (he is flying down and meeting me there), so it’s not going to be too long before I see him. It was just hard that he was somewhat “moving out” this morning.

So the next big things to tackle are the STDs, which I have an appointment with a stationary lady on the 14th (gotta keep myself busy on V-day) and another one the following weekend. Plus of course the dress, but I am playing hookey from work on Monday to go with my mom. Don't think I can use the "broke my leg skiing" excuse... anyone know where I can get a fake cast?

You have done lots lately - good work! I love the dresses that you tried on, did you decide which one you are going with? I love Jenny Lee dresses. I was thinking of making a trip up to her store in LA, but still haven't decided if it is worth it. I don't think I know of any SD stores that carry her.  I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. It's so hard when your baby isn't feeling well. I hope that she is doing better.

Have a great time in Tahoe!

Hi danimal,

Just wanted to say hello and wish you a belated welcome to BI journaling! I enjoyed your engagement story—it's so romantic, with all those candles and rose petals. And wow, it looks like you've been a whirlwind of wedding planning activity! Just reading your journal makes me feel tired. But seriously, I love how energized and organized you are, it's quite inspirational. You're off to a wonderful start; keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to reading more about your plans!

Oh, and have a marvelous time in Tahoe!

I am a senior member!!!!!!  I am such a geek, I'm so excited!

Always - I would definitley recommend going to http://www.thewhitedress.com - the White Dress . They have some other stuff in similar styles to Jenny Lee, so you don't have to be limited to just one designer with your trip up. I am going there on Monday with my mom (I'm playing hookey from work!). It's in OC too, so it would be a bit of a closer drive for you.

Oh, and big news on the bridesmaid front. So my little sister is a wreck. She is clinically depressed and bipolar. She really is a mean-spirited bad person. If I wasn't related to her, there is no way I'd have anything to do with her. We fight, we don't get along, she treats my mom like crap, I really resent her for that. So anyway, despite all of that, I asked her to be a bridesmaid because it's the right thing to do by my mom, and I got an email from her today declining! I'm so relieved! But now I can't control what she wears!

Yay! Tahoe tomorrow! Uh-oh, I guess I better start packing. I'll have more wedding dress news to post when I get back next week.

Yay! Back from Tahoe and I've found THE DRESS!

Tahoe was a lot of fun, except that Russ, one of the groomsmen, fell on the first run of the trip and another snowboarder ran over his head. He had a huge gash on his head and got six staples!  Poor guy. He's doing ok though, and he was on the mountain the next day.

Here are some pictures.

So I decided that on the first day back from Tahoe, I didn't want to go to work, so I should play hookey and go wedding dress shopping with my mom! She came up from SD and we started at Saks on Wilshire in The Hills... Beverly that is. They had a Reem Acra trunk show this weekend, and they were supposed to hold over three dresses for me (there is this one that I always am wearing when I dream about our wedding), but they never got them in the first place. I was a little bummed because they had confirmed to me that the dresses were coming in. But then the nice saleslady told me that she actually preferred Kenneth Pool to Reem Acra, and I have to say that now I agree! Kenny (we're BFF now, I can call him that! ) has beautiful, more feminine and more intricate bead-work, and is better finished underneath. I think Reem does more embroidery (with thread) and Kenny does more beading. My dress is BLINGED-OUT! Here it is, I'm so excited.

I tried on two other Kennys there, but this is the one! It's going to be in white, not blue, and I'm not going to wear the straps.

I also went to Erin Cole Couture in Newport because they have Romona Keveza, and I ended up trying on more Judd Waddell. I LOVE this store though because the owner makes all this beautiful jewelry and she does her own veils and they are absolutely great. So if you're looking for something unique and cool, check her out!

We went back to the White Dress too in Corona Del Mar, and the store is super cool and I love it there, but with there and Erin Cole I was like "Get this off me, it's not the one" after every single dress. I feel so much better about the Kenny after trying on the other dresses that I had really liked before. It definitely fits my personality the most!

Yay! Today is our minus seven month anniversary! I am very sad though since Justin is up in Seattle working and I'm not going to get to see him for awhile. I'm just feeling very down and I'm kinda apathetic about other stuff... especially school. I think I have senioritis. Can you catch that in grad school?

Thanks for stopping by chadanderika, alwaysabrdsmaid, and kaydd! I'm glad you like my dress too!

I got my e-pics back, and they're pretty good. I am a little bummed out because it looks like I have way too much makeup on, which isn't really me. I was OK with it at the time because I was thinking "it's better to be too made up than not made up for the pictures" but now I"m not so sure. Plus it was really foggy at the beach and my hair frizzed bigtime. I was going for the Jessica Simpson look, but not quite. I only have small pics to post, here are my favs:

I also wanted to get my to-do list written out:
  • Reception site: The Prado
  • Photographer: Joe Stein from Studio Paris
  • Officiant: Fr. Menees
  • Dress: Kenneth Pool!
  • Registry; done
  • Honeymoon - Tahiti!
  • Beautification - Bleaching my teeth, went to dermatologist to make sure my skin looks good. In Progress
  • Need to book OOT hotel rooms. FH's action
  • Wedding rings
  • Videographer - Done. Encore Video
  • Florist - Waiting on Paul's quote
  • DJ  - Done. Mike Hogan
  • Engagement photos. Done. Joe said we could take a few more next time we're in SD, so I may take him up on that.
  • Invitations - This weekend. I'm meeting with two different people that can design them. I saw some that I liked online, and FH likes them too, so I have a good idea of what I want already. Need to send out STDs soon!
  • Wedding party - Mostly done. I need to figure out who I want to have for one more usher.
  • Coordinator - I gave my mom the action to find one if she wants one. Only need day-of since I know what I want and love planning
  • Photo Booth - we really want to do an old-fashioned carnival photo booth
  • BP Presents - Instead of presents we want to have surfing lessons for everyone, and my aunt is a professional photographer, so I will have her take pics for everyone. I think it will be good to give everyone a great memory instead of something they're only going to use occasionally. I'm just worried about the practicality of doing it.
  • Ceremony musicians - taking care of that this weekend
  • Rehearsal dinner - looking for somewhere fun in Old Town (but not OTMC) that has a private area for ~60 people.
  • Need to set up shuttle service for guests back and forth between hotel and Balboa Park. No drinking and driving!
Edited to fix pictures

Your photos look great!  I don't think you look like you have too much makeup on at all. I know how it is when you look at a photo and feel like you look overdone, but from my POV you look beautiful and your makeup looks natural.

Just had to say that Michigan beat Illinois in basketball tonight!!! This is a huge deal because Michigan usually can only beat Illinois in football, but now I have the bragging rights over Justin in both of the big sports! I'm super excited. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for saying my makeup doesn't look too heavy in my epics. After mulling it over a bit I feel a lot better about it. Hopefully when Joe touches them up they'll look better.

I also wanted to give a shout-out to all the Military Brides on here. Justin is up in Seattle for four months doing boring desk work, and I definitely know when he's coming home. I'm having a tough time with it, but I couldn't imagine how badly I'd be freaking out if he was in harms way and I wasn't sure exactly when he'd be back. I just have to applaud all of your strength!

Back to wedding planning - going to the Bridal Show at the Sheraton last weekend helped me see how far we've come since the Bridal Bazaar. I've got everything important done except for the Invites & STDs, Ceremony Musicians, and Bridesmaid dresses. But I'm still going to steal Katie's to-do list because it rocks and it makes me feel good to see what I have accomplished so far. (Thanks Katie!)

To Do List

  1. Book OOT Rooms - Anyone have an opinion on the Holiday Inn in Old Town? They had a good rate
  2. Find wedding night accommodations -- waiting to hear back from the new Hard Rock Hotel in SD! Guessing it will be too expensive, but wouldn't that be cool?
  3. Finalize guest list with Mom and Justin's fam
  4. Find out about pre-marital counsiling

Upcoming Appointments:

  1. 2/28 Midterm. Not cool.
  2. 3/18 Trunk show with MOH, BM Dresses at Mon Amie

Wow danimal - I just started reading your journal and am totally amazed at everything you have done so far.  You are totally organized and everything looks great!  I LOVE the dress!  It is totally beautiful.  Hope that things aren't too lonely while your FI is gone.  (I understand how it is...my FI had to move to SD a month before me and it was really hard.... i don't know how I would have handled it had it been longer) I agree with you though about all of the military brides.  I am amazed at their strength!  Keep up all of the great planning!

I must totally agree with your shout out to all military brides. You are the nation's backbone. My kids go to school with almost  all Navy or Marine. When they are married, it is just as hard but with kids. They always have such a positive attitude. True heroines.

Well, I finally got through to the Hard Rock Hotel, and apparently the big party I saw in a magazine was a kick-off for them starting to sell condo space. It wasn't the opening. That's not until Spring 2007. Oh well, maybe we'll have to spend a night there for our 1-year anniversary or something else fun!

Danimal! It's about time I stopped by your journal. As you already know,
I love your ring but I had no idea you were my soul sister when it came to
dresses too! I have been eyeing the Melissa Sweet for 2 years now, and it
is my favorite dress...too bad with too hefty of a price tag for me. La
Sposa and Pronovias makes similar ones too...I am going to have to look

Thanks for visiting Katie, Erika, Always and Hoodlims! You guys rock!

I just wanted to get on here to let you all know that I now have my TIVO set up to record every episode of A Wedding Story and Whose Wedding is it Anyway?!!! I am such a geek! I love those shows, I'm not getting any studying done for my midterm tomorrow! Are any of you guys addicted too?

I just ordered all of my epics for my STDs. I'm just going to get plain white foldover cards, print the message inside them, and then use photo-corners to put the pictures on the front. That way people can save the pictures and frame them or put them in an album or on their fridge or whatever they want. I'll post a pic as soon as he sends me the final touched-up copy. :)

Ok Danimal,
I just read through your entire journal and WOW, you have done so
much! I am sad that you did not get the Melissa Sweet dress but I
LOVE your Kenneth Pool(e?)! It is so gorgeous! Good job on staying away
from the David's Bridal, I have heard some bad things about that place.
I am sorry Justin is away for so long. 4 months is hard, especially
when you are in school because it seems like you can't get away. But at
least you are keeping yourself busy and before you know it you guys will
see each other again!
I don't have cable but when I used to babysit the neighbors kids I
made it a point to watch A Wedding Story every day. What is the other
show about though? I have never seen it!
Just stay away from Baby Story...

I loved the Melissa Sweet, but my Kenny just felt like it was a lot more me.

Who's wedding is it anyway is fabulous, and it's on the Style channel. Not everyone gets that. I just had to call the cable company and I'm paying $5 extra a month, and it's totally worth it for me. It's all about the little details in wedding planning from a wedding coordinator's point of view. Fah-bu-lous! I'm addicted!

We have our OOT Hotel block set up at the Marriott in Old Town, so I'm glad to have that one done. It's still stressful because we could only get 15 rooms without putting down a deposit, and I know we're going to need way more than that. I hope people book early.

Ordered all the cards for our Save the Dates, I'm so excited! Here is the pic we're going with. My photographer says it looks a little off because of something to do with the computer monitor - I think Justin's eyes look a little too big and blue. They're so nice without any touch-ups, you know? I can't wait to see the proof in person.

Danimal - I am so addicted to Whose Wedding, but I can only see it when I am at Chad's. Last weekend sucked - who's idea was it to have them on from 3 to 7 in the morning?!?!?!

Also the pic is so beautiful. You two make a beautiful couple.

I just stole your marathon to-do list (thanks to Katie!) -- thank you. It seriously wore me out.

That photo is beautiful, it is so natural. You two look like you're made for each other.

What kind of engineer are you? I work with good ole PE's every day.

P.S. I love Whose Wedding ... have you seen the one where Kim(?), the planner, is the bride? It is classic.

Team HoodLims - Pedaling On!

OMG, I have been wondering if there is one out there where Kim gets married because I've seen some where she talks about her FH, and some where she talks about her husband. I can't wait until my TIVO picks up on it! For some reason my TIVO decided not to record anything yetsterday, so I'm heartbroken I missed Scrubs and NCIS. I hope you can catch more of it Erika! So fun!

kaydd - I'm an aerospace engineer (so is FH). He works on airplanes though and I'm working on space stuff.  I had my last engineering midterm ever last night. Went pretty well, but I get my Masters in May - woo hoo! I was super excited to order my graduation announcements last night, it was fun like picking out wedding invitations! :)

Justin comes home for the weekend tomorrow and we are going to Mammoth! And the bathroom remodel is coming along! :)

I love Justin soooo much! He was supposed to get in late tonite from Seattle, but he took the earlier flight and showed up at work with a rose to surprise me. He's such a keeper!

So I have some news on the bridesmaid front - my cousin asked if she could step down from the bridal party. I'm kinda sad about it, but I totally understand her reasons behind it. She'll still be at the wedding, which is the important part. Oh well, I'll have to look on the bright side - now we'll have even sides with 9 BMs and GMs. Nine sounds so much better than 10, don't you think?

Do you think I should still get her a bridesmaid present? It might be the nice thing to do even though I know I don't have to do it.

If you understand why she stepped down I would do something. I would do something different than the BMs, but more than - say the guest book person or reader. Make sure you put an extra special note in it to thank her for the courtesy, and not just abandoning her post without giving you any warning.

I had the same problem with my MOH, she had to step down because of her daughter. I will definately send her something even though she won't be able to attend at all.

That is just my HUMBLE opinion.

Wow! I've been away from BI for far too long! I was up in Seattle visiting Justin all last week (and working with a subcontractor up there, so the trip was free!) so I have been very busy. It was a rough week because Justin is living/working in Everett and I was working in Auburn, which is an hour and a half drive if you wake up at 5am to beat the traffic. I was pooped, and we were sharing Justin's twin bed, so I wasn't getting much sleep. But Justin was super sweet and we were supposed to meet in the city for dinner on Friday night, and he got us a super fancy suite at a really nice hotel, it was so thoughtful of him! And definitely too much money! We went ring shopping in the city when we were there, and we found the COOLEST wedding ring for my FH. It was a platnum band that had a titanium band sandwiched in the middle (make sense?) and then it had black diamonds dotted around in the platinum. It was so cool, but I had no idea how rare/expensive black diamonds are. $4000! I'll have to do some research to see if I can find something similar for him that's not so much.

As for wedding stuff, this weekend was supposed to be the big BM weekend since my MOH was supposed to come in from Chicago and we could look at dresses and stuff, but now that's all up in the air. Her grandfather passed away this past weekend, and they were really close, so we're not sure when she's going to come into town.

Got my STD cards, just need to figure out printing them and putting them all together. I wish Justin would get me his guest list stuff! Why do grooms always have problems with this?

I picked Paul as my florist, and I think we're going to go with Joyful Spirits for our music.

Here's a "mini" to-do-list:

To Do List

  1. Find wedding night accommodations -- The W or there is Hotel Solamar we want to look at.
  2. Finalize guest list with Mom and Justin's fam
  3. Find out about pre-marital counsiling

Upcoming Appointments:

  1. 3/18 Trunk show with MOH, BM Dresses at Mon Amie

Despite all the travel and those darned twin beds, it is so nice you got to see the boy!

Do you have a photo of the ring? I'd love to see the black diamonds in action.

I just noticed you are thinking about surf lessons ... I hosted a surf lesson for some out of town friends once in Mission Beach, the teachers were great and we all wore their wetsuits (no bathing suit issues!). I can research the name of the company, if you're interested.

Team HoodLims - Pedaling On!

kaydd - Yes, I'd love to know the information of the company you used. That's a good point about the wetsuits too. They're unflattering on everyone, right?

hoodlims - So my first bridesmaid newsletter was six pages long. I put in the article from the Knot about what a bridesmaid's responsibilities are, then I made some of my own comments about what I really need from them (make sure my mom and dad are nowhere near each other, just relax and have fun and kiss cute boys!). I gave them a list of all the web pages I frequent for information incase they are looking for some, and I put in a little blur about each bridesmaid and their picture and contact information. There are nine of them, so that's why it took so many pages! Plus I just put in a few important dates.

Justin has the picture of the ring with the black diamonds, but he is going to bring it down with him the day after tomorrow when he comes to visit again! Yay! I got tickets to the NCAA tourney at SDSU for him since his Illini are playing, and he is so excited! Plus it's St. Patty's day this weekend, and one of our GM's last weekend in town before he moves, so there is a lot of fun stuff going on this weekend.

As for wedding-related stuff, my mom finally found us a coordinator that she knows through a committee she is on (Jill Pacino, I will post her web page when I get it), and Saks sent me a swatch of my dress fabric without me having to ask for it, so I was super excited last night!

Yay! Today is our negative six month anniversary! We are coming down to San Diego tonite for the NCAA tourney, so that should be A LOT of fun.

Have some new wedding updates:
  • Wedding night acommodations: http://www.hotelsolmar - Hotel Solamar
  • Month-of coordinator: Jill Pancio from http://www.weddingsbyse.com/ - Simply Exquisite Weddings & Events
  • Our cake: We want it to look like this, but with a monogram cake topper instead of the bow, and no writing on the sides. Just very plain and simple. We might bedazzle the ribbon a little bit.

My journal is here up to three months before the wedding. The wedding was gorgeous, the marriage was a colossal mess. I even renewed my vows.

I'm still best friends with many women I met on here years ago, and I'm so thankful for this site. Dating a nice guy now who isn't a narcissistic cheater, so maybe I'll be back one day.

In the mean time, if you need a Day of Coordinator or a Wedding Officiant - I am available! (It's my side gig).
