your friends and family were spread all over the country?  I definitely don't think that people could fly to SD for both the wedding and shower.  The only city in which there are more than 5 people is the city in which I currently live (Chicago), but the people I would invite are all grad students so they don't have a lot of money.  I feel like it would be wrong to ask for gifts from them (maybe I should have a no-gifts shower)?

We are going to Glen Ivy for the local gals. The day before my wedding for OOT we are having a spa party at a local bath products store and they are bringing in mini massages, reflexology and paraffin hand dips. They will also get a spa goodie bag. It will only be $30-$40 a person and I made it optional so people that are busy being tourists do not feel obligated. Also, it is pretty much implied that this is an event and not a bridal shower hence no gifts.

I would not have one.
I really don't want one so it may be easy for me to say, but if it just
doesn't work out then don't have one. You could ask your girlfriends
in Chicago if they would like to join you for a girl-day/night-out or
something like that.

Hi there...I am having the same dilemma. My 3 bridesmaids live in 3 different states and not in CA. A friend wants to throw me a shower so it will prob be small....no bridesmaids just some family and friends and maybe some classmates. Go for it. They can always decline. And plus they dont have to spend a fortune on gifts.

I think that if you hold a shower it's appropriate to invite guests who live in the area (i.e. San Diego shower would include San Diego residents).  If you're not sure about your friends in Chicago being able to afford gifts, then you could plan a girls afternoon at a salon or brunch at a local restaurant to celebrate.
